Campfires are created using a Campfire Materials. Once lit, they can be used to cook food. Be warned, both zombies and human survivors can be set on fire if they stand too close to the fire! According to one of the PZ developers, the best suggestion for what to do if caught on fire is to run around for a short time.[1]
As shown below, different items can be used to light campfires, and, once alight, it is possible to 'add fuel' using the right click menu on a placed campfire in order to keep it lit for different lengths of time. Kindlings don't work every time, and can break after a few tries. Firemen have a better chance of lighting a campfire with kindling. Lighters or matches plus fuel are more reliable.
