When playing in Story Mode, the tutorial is the first part of the story "'Til Death Us Do Part", in which you are taught some basic concepts of Project Zomboid.

Events

Template:Spoilers The game begins on February 23, at 1:00 PM. It is the fifth day after the zombie outbreak in the town of Muldraugh, with the player standing beside Kate Smith. Kate is lying in bed with a broken leg, caused from an attack by looters. After the opening dialogue the player has two immediate choices. Either to carry on with the objectives or to make use of a pillow and smother Kate Smith, which will end the tutorial straight away.

Continuing through tutorial, the player is directed to find a bandage to stem the bleeding from Kate's leg and some painkillers to help ease her pain. The player is then issued two more tasks, searching for items to barricade the windows and doors of the starting house before exploring a neighbouring building for food.

Once completed the player will need to prepare a pot of soup using the oven. As the soup is being cooked, a message is broadcast over the radio upstairs...

At this point if the player rushes upstairs without turning off the oven, a vicious fire will break out setting off the fire alarm. The resulting noise will attract all nearby zombies meaning almost certain death.

If instead, the player sensibly turns the oven off before heading upstairs, a raider will enter the house, tearing down any barricades that get in his way. This NPC will head upstairs into the bedroom and confront either the player or Kate, depending who he comes across first. There will then be a stand off which will result in either the death of Kate, the death of the player and Kate, or the raider's death.

Once the tutorial has finished, the player is free to roam Knox County as he wishes. The player is not required to finish the tutorial to play the game. After a few days, the zombie density increases to average.
