Step 1: Collecting Materials

There are three items you must have before you can build things: nails, wooden planks, and a hammer. Nails can be found almost anywhere. On the other hand, wooden planks and hammers are harder to come by. Hammers can rarely be found outside of a hardware store or warehouse. Nails and hammers (among other things) can be found on dead zombies.

Wooden Planks can be collected in a few ways. If you're lucky, you can sometimes find them inside of crates. You can equip an axe or a sledgehammer and destroy doors, which will yield one to two planks per door. The most reliable way of getting wooden planks, however, is by chopping down trees with an axe and then cutting them into logs using a saw.

In addition to simple construction, you have the option of decorating your wooden structures by plastering and painting them using plaster, Paint Brushes and cans of paint. One bag of plaster makes one bucket of plaster (using water), and one bucket of plaster will plaster 4 wall tiles.

Step 2: The Building Menu

Right click the ground to bring up the context menu. When you have a hammer in your inventory, you will be able to browse the list of possible constructions underneath the 'Build' tab. The names will appear in red when you lack the necessary materials or required carpentry skill. Clicking on what you wish to build, a preview of the construction will appear. Position it where you want it to appear (rotate using R) and then click. Your character will automatically begin building.

Step 3: Level Up

As you complete more constructions, you will gain experience in the carpentry skill. You can open your skill menu using the 'C' key. When you have gained enough experience to advance to the next level, you can click the icon beside the carpentry skill to level up. As you gain levels in carpentry, more constructions will become available and your character will be able to build sturdier structures overall.

Step 4: Decorate

You can decorate your wooden walls, door frames and window frames using plaster and paint. First you need to mix plaster in a Bucket using Bag of Plaster Powder and Water. When you have the Plaster Bucket in your main inventory, right click on the structure to plaster it. You can paint the plastered surface using a Paintbrush and Paint.
