Step 1: Collecting Materials

In order to even have the ability to build something you will need three crucial components. The first being a Hammer. The hammer is the main tool for building/barricading in Project Zomboid, so it's incredibly important that you seek this item out from the get go. Hammers can be occasionally difficult to find but to have the best chances of finding a hammer you should be sure to look in crates, or search garages around a home. They will usually more often than not contain a Hammer. You will also need to be on the look out for nails, planks of wood and if possible an Axe and Saw.. Nails can usually be found in the same places as hammers, garages are a good source for large amount of nails. Wood planks can be a bit harder to find. While you can occasionally find them in crates, the best way to get wood planks is by finding an axe or saw and chopping down a tree. While any weapon can theoretically get a tree down, an axe is the most efficient way to accomplish this task. When the axe is equipped hold down the Ctrl key and click the left mouse button to attack, as if you were attacking a zombie. Aim towards the tree, and you should be hearing a hacking sound every time you swing towards the tree. This means the tree is in the process of being cut down. In a couple of swings the tree should now be gone and piles of logs should be left behind. Now access your inventory and click the ground tile icon and some logs should appear. If they don't move around a bit to find that sweet spot that allows you to pick it up.

Now we need to convert those logs into wooden planks to use them as a buildable material (or even to barricade). This is where that saw comes in handy. By Right-Clicking on the saw or the logs, an option should appear saying "Saw Logs". This will break down the logs into the necessary wooden planks.

So lets just do a checklist to make sure you have everything now:

  • Hammer
  • Nails
  • Wooden Planks

Yes? Excellent! You're ready to move onto step 2.

Step 2: The Building Menu

Right click the ground to bring up the context menu. When you have a hammer in your inventory, you will be able to browse the list of possible constructions underneath the 'Build' tab. The names will appear in red when you lack the necessary materials or required carpentry skill. Clicking on what you wish to build, a preview of the construction will appear. Position it where you want it to appear (rotate using R) and then click. Your character will automatically begin building.

Step 3: Level Up

As you complete more constructions, you will gain experience in the carpentry skill. You can open your skill menu using the 'C' key. When you have gained enough experience to advance to the next level, you can click the icon beside the carpentry skill to level up.

Reading carpentry skill books will increase the rate at which you gain carpentry skill by adding a multiplier to your skill increase after every construction you complete. These are usually found in bookshelves in most houses.

As you gain levels in carpentry, more constructions will become available and your character will build sturdier structures overall. The visual appearance of a construction will change depending on the skill level of the creator at the time of construction. Higher level carpenters generally make more professional-looking structures than beginning carpenters.

Step 4: Decorate

You can decorate your wooden walls, door frames and window frames using plaster and paint. First you need to mix plaster in a Bucket using Bag of Plaster Powder and Water. When you have the Plaster Bucket in your main inventory, right click on the structure to plaster it. You can paint the plastered surface using a Paintbrush and Paint.
