Knox County is an area in southeastern Kentucky, USA where Project Zomboid is set. It takes place within the cities of Muldraugh, West Point, Valley Station, Dixie and surrounding countryside as well as the soon to be added Louisville, Brandenburg and Fort Knox. Currently, the map consists of the towns of Muldraugh, West Point, the Valley Station and Dixie, with a vast but unfinished world around it. The 0.29.17 version of Muldraugh is 8 map cells, whereas the entire 0.2.0 version map fit in one cell. The map is heavily inspired by the real towns of Muldraugh and West Point.

Future locations are rumoured to be Louisville and Fort Knox, along with countless areas of forest, small towns and farms. Brandenburg was previously a rumored location, however it has since been replaced with the town of Riverside in Version 38.15.

Knox Country (formerly known as Knox County) is a partially fictional area where the events of Project Zomboid take place. There are also some entirely fictional towns within Project Zomboid, including Rosewood and Riverside.

Knox Country was just your standard, peaceful countryside region until an outbreak of a mysterious illness that reanimates infected persons into zombies, later coined the Knox Infection. Fearing further spread, The U.S Government designated Knox Country as an exclusion zone, quarantined the area and prevented any information from reaching the outside world.
