LBMW - Kentucky Radio is a radio station that plays over the 93.2 frequency. It is a preset on all radios. The hosts, Frank Hemingway and Jackie Jaye, report as the Knox Event unfolds. Over the course of their stories, they witness the outbreak firsthand. It has a television counterpart, LBMW Network.

Their main studio is located exclusively within Louisville, next to Medical Center, along with a television studio not far away. The company uses Franklin Valuline vans.

Hosts

Guests

  • Denise (civilian from within the Exclusion Zone)
  • Professor John Ramirez (military scientist)
  • Joe (civilian that escaped a military base)

Content

Both hosts, Jackie Jaye and Frank Hemingway, are stationed on the north side military's Exclusion Zone. Both hosts are highly critical of the military's actions towards the Event and attempt to show the human side of the refugees of the Event. The first interview, with Denise, reveals that families have been separated and displaced by the military. The next interview with a civilian, Joe, reveals a bit more of the morbidity within the Exclusion Zone and particularly within a military base.

As their story plays out, Jackie and Frank have run-ins with the government as well as the infected themselves.

Some time after Jackie and Frank stop broadcasting, Jonas begins broadcasting on the LBMW frequency.

Jackie:

This is Jackie Jaye reporting for LBMW...
... here at the military blockade to the north of the Exclusion Zone.
It's a scene of drama, anger and confusion here.
We've got folks turning up trying to get through.
And standing in their way are guys in camo.
US Army recruits who four days ago were waiting to ship out overseas from local military bases...
... but who are now checkpoint guards around their former home.
And still no word on the condition of those inside the Zone!
We know there's something like an influenza virus in there...
... but it's localized.
There's just a handful of reports of strange behaviors.
Panic, confusion...
I've been told that military scientists ARE present within the zone.
We should hear concrete details tomorrow.
If anything else comes out of the Exclusion Zone...
... you'll be the first to know.
Keep safe Kentucky.

Jackie:

This is Jackie Jaye.
I'm here at the checkpoints to the north of the Knox exclusion zone.
I'm here with Denise, who has a story to tell.
Denise, you were one of the last out of the Zone. Am I right?

Denise:

I was. My Mom's still in there.

Jackie:

Have you heard from her?

Denise:

Nothin'. Phones are out.
These guys... all standing in-between us.

Jackie:

The Army, yes. And how did you get out?

Denise:

Well we heard the helicopters all night through.
Mom was ill. High temperature, real sleepy.
Nothing serious I thought.
I was going to work at Gas to Go early, like every morning.
I saw these guys in plastic suits.
Y'know... bright yellow?

Jackie:

Hazard suits Denise?

Denise:

I guess. Anyway I saw them down the road.
Thought it was weird, but everything's weird at 4AM right?
Then I drive through, get taken aside...
They shine a light into my eyes. Take a blood sample...
Keep me locked tight until like... ten minutes ago?
Then they say I'm clear and kick me out.
Then I meet you.
What's going on Jackie?

Jackie:

We don't know just yet Denise.
From what I've been told your Mom will be fine.

Denise:

You know that?

Jackie:

I don't know that, I've been told that.
Keep close Denise, you'll know what I know.
Just like the guys listening will.
Keep safe Kentucky.

Frank:

This is Frank Hemingway, taking over coverage of the Knox Event from Jackie.
It's the end of the second day of the Knox exclusion.
Still no word on the contagion.
So what do we know?
Influenza symptoms brought the towns of West Point and Muldraugh to a standstill.
Then overnight... the blockades appeared.
Military sources suggest the area is watertight...
... there's even boats patrolling the Ohio river.
If the checkpoints aren't gone tomorrow, however... the boundary will be tested.
We've got concerned locals, evacuated families and, yup...
... more news teams turning up every hour.
Everyone wants to get in just as, we assume, the residents want to get out.
We're promised answers tomorrow from one... General John McGrew.
We can't wait to hear them General.
Better make them good...
Frank Hemingway. LBMW.

Frank:

Good morning.
You're listening to LBMW.
It's day three of the Knox evacuation.
Still NO official statement on the contagion that has gripped Kentucky.
The Exclusion Zone remains in place.
Military personnel from local bases have a HUGE area closed off.
Their primary deployment: south of Louisville.
The Exclusion Zone stretches out below the curve of the Ohio river...
...and contains the small towns of Muldraugh and West Point.
We have been told: there will be answers.
LBMW understands a press conference will be held this afternoon...
... on the brewing chaos of the last four days.
Will the communications black-out be explained?
Until then, the only advice for those nearby remains: stay indoors.
This is Frank Hemingway for LBMW.

Jackie:

You're listening to LBMW.
We're reporting direct from where General John McGrew made the following statement:

McGrew:

I am making this statement at 11AM on the 14th July 1993.
There are many rumors circulating. Many falsehoods.
This is an appeal for calm.
I can confirm there has been an outbreak.
The ailment is, as yet, unidentified.
It is flu-like. It leads to panic. It leads to confusion.
There is NO evidence of fatalities within the Exclusion Zone.
We are using judged and judicious force to maintain the border.
Warning shots have been fired.
No civilians have been harmed.
We must ensure that this infection is not allowed to spread.
I am in hourly contact with the President on this matter.
The no-fly zone will remain in place for the foreseeable future.
At this time, we will take no questions.

Jackie:

You're listening to LBMW. I'm Jackie Jaye.
The exclusion zone to the south of Louisville remains in place today.
No vehicles, no phone calls, no cameras...
... just the rapid deployment of military personnel and vehicles.
LBMW is in a temporary camp on the exclusion border.
Panic throughout the nation is endemic.
What next for Kentucky in this sad story?

Frank:

Good evening. This is LBMW.
I'm Frank Hemingway.
After repeated demands General John McGrew today explained the Exclusion Zone.
But are his answers enough for Kentucky?

McGrew:

I can confirm there has been an outbreak.
The ailment is, as yet, unidentified.
It is flu-like. It leads to panic. It leads to confusion.
There is NO evidence of fatalities within the Exclusion Zone.
We are using judged and judicious force to maintain the border.
Warning shots have been fired.
No civilians have been harmed.

Frank:

General McGrew went on to state that the no-fly zone...
... would remain in place for the immediate future.
His comments have done little to allay public fear.
Why are we in the dark?
Why can't they talk to us?
And why won't they let US talk to them?
Ah, wait we've just got this in.
It's a statement from the President distributed to all media.

President:

This is a distressing time.
The situation in Kentucky is unexpected and saddening.
My first thoughts are with the friends and families of those within the Zone.
People have been separated, folk have been evacuated...
I understand the difficulties facing us.
However, I have faith in the fine people of the Center for Disease Control...
... to get to the root of the panic and confusion within the Exclusion Zone.
I have faith in our Servicemen and Women to fulfill their duties...
... and for General John McGrew to command them with the foresight and dedication...
... he has shown throughout his exemplary career.
It is a distressing time America, but you are in safe hands.
Thank you.

Frank:

This is Frank Hemingway, LBMW.
I'm in the media camp on the Knox Exclusion Zone boundary.
Last night, the President gave full support to agencies fighting the Knox Event.

President:

My first thoughts are with the friends and families of those within the Zone.
People have been separated, folk have been evacuated...

Frank:

Now back to the Exclusion Zone Boundary, where I am this morning.
In my hand? An exclusive statement from General John McGrew.
Here he apologises for...
a 'lack of clarity'...
... in what many are calling 'The Knox Event'.
In the EXCLUSIVE statement to LBMW he again confirmed...
... that the outbreak is contained...
...and that he is unaware of fatalities within the exclusion zone.
When I asked whether the military sensitivity of the region...
... had an impact on the way the Event is being handled...
... I was met only with silence.
This is Frank Hemingway for LBMW.
Saying it, like I see it.
Keep safe Kentucky.

Jackie:

Hi. Jackie Jaye for LBMW.
What caused the Event? Rumor is rife.
A strange cloud hangs over Kentucky.
I'm in one of the camps that has grown on the Event border.
Displaced families, people with families inside the Event...
They're all here. And, guess what? They're angry.

Parent:

They say we shouldn't be worried...
... but they won't even say what in HELL this is?
He says there are no casualties?
There's a lot of bad stuff leading up to a casualty, right?
What happened to my wife, General?
Why can't we speak?

Jackie:

Do you know what caused this sir?

Parent:

Hell if I know.
Some are saying it was the smell.
Awful bad smell here, for weeks.

Jackie:

And what do you think has happened to your Mommy, sweetheart?

Child:

I don't know.

Parent:

Neither do I honey.
It'll be okay.

Jackie:

This is Jackie Jaye. Keep safe guys.

Jackie:

This is Jackie Jaye, here today with Professor John Ramirez - a military scientist
Professor Ramirez, we've been told that you can provide some answers.
How are they doing in there?

Ramirez:

Not good Jackie.
They're all on two feet, but they're in a bad way.

Jackie:

What are the symptoms? Is this life-threatening?

Ramirez:

We've taken samples.
There's a team looking into that right now.
There's no reason to spread fear or alarm.
We have top men looking into what this is...
...and just where it came from.

Jackie:

And the symptoms?

Ramirez:

Like we said: flu-like at first, then - panic and confusion.
We think the spread has slowed now.
But we don't deal in absolutes.
This remains a volatile situation, with a contagious illness at its heart.
The lockdown is required by international law...
... and common sense...
... until we know for sure we are safe.
I'm sure y'all can understand why.

Jackie:

And the reports of violence?

Ramirez:

At this point in time we have no reason to believe folks won't recover.

Jackie:

Thank you for your time.
I'm Jackie Jaye. Keep safe Kentucky.

Good evening. I'm Frank Hemingway.
This is LBMW.
Public anger reaches boiling point...
... and Knox Telecommunications accept responsibility for ongoing communication outages...
... that were in place days BEFORE the Knox Event began.
Meanwhile, fresh details of the Knox Infection emerge.
Flu-like - then panic and confusion.
A contagion that spread throughout entire communities.
A contagion that, scientists claim, might soon have run its course.
So, if it's all over: why the black-out?
What aren't we being told?
Today a public demonstration in Washington DC exploded into angry scenes.
All we need, the people say, are answers.
LBMW ask the questions...
But sometimes the silence is even more damning...
...than the answers that aren't there.
Frank Hemingway. LBMW.

This is Frank Hemingway, signing off for the night.
Growing unrest has been reported throughout the nation.
Placards in Washington. Firebombs in Detroit.
A Greene's Grocery Store in downtown LA: set ablaze.
Isolated incidents with one voice:
'We don't feel safe.'
and 'What aren't we being told?'
Meanwhile, camps on the edge of the Event boundary continue to grow.
Onlookers, well-wishers, worried families...
... staring through the wire and arguing with military personnel.
As anger continues to grow.
Frank Hemingway. LBMW.

We're five days into the Event exclusion. This is LBMW.
This is Jackie Jaye on the Event boundary, with your breaking news.
Last night anger at the handling of the Knox Event boiled over.
As public outcry and disorder spills onto the streets of our cities.
The President has released a statement asking for calm.

President:

I understand the frustration. I can hear you: loud and clear.
I understand the frustration because I'm like you.
I want to know when my fellow Americans...
...fellow Americans who are laid low with sickness...
... can be returned to their families.
To this end I will be talking to the General today.
From which I will be able to provide more answers.
However.
The horrifying activities we have seen on our streets over the last 24 hours?
There is no excuse. No excuse whatsoever.
Arrests will be made. Every authority is on high alert.
If you are seeking to disrupt our way of life through fear and scaremongering...
...you will be sorely disappointed.
I will come back to you with more information...
...FULL information...
When I have it in my hand.

Jackie:

Meanwhile, closer to home.
General John McGrew has issued a warning to folks camped out on the Event line.
His message: if worried relatives and displaced families do not move on...
... they will be dispersed.
Meanwhile, gunshots from inside the Zone have been heard.
The military refused to comment.
This is Jackie Jaye. Keep safe Kentucky.

You're listening to LBMW. I'm Jackie Jaye.
Breaking news.
Commercial flights out of the US have been grounded by the World Health Organisation.
Any flight scheduled to take off after six tonight is cancelled.
In a statement the World Health Organisation highlights...
... an 'ongoing concern over the still unidentified Kentucky outbreak'...
... as it seeks to prevent the malady spreading internationally.
The President has reacted with anger.

President:

This move is as unwelcome...
...as it is economically unsound.
I will seek to redress this move at every opportunity.
After talks with the General I am satisfied that...
The Knox Event is, to all intents of purpose, contained.
However.
Tests on those recovering from the Knox sickness are inconclusive.
We have labs set up inside the Zone now.
I assure the American people that every dollar I have at my disposal...
...will go toward their healing and rehabilitation.
However, I repeat: the Knox Event IS contained.
Procedures are underway to ensure our safety.
That will be all.

Jackie:

From six tonight EST the ONLY craft with permission to take off...
...will carry medicines or military personnel.
Meanwhile in unsavory scenes...
...panic-buying has turned to looting in many states.
America sits on a knife-edge.
Jackie Jaye.

Frank:

Scenes of turmoil tonight as military forces roll into towns and cities.
Peacekeeping forces have been stationed throughout the nation.
Throughout it all: that same message:
Stay indoors where possible. Do not panic.

Jackie:

This all in response to the unprecedented move made by the WHO...
...who have cancelled all flights to and from mainland America.
All eyes are on developments in a sleepy corner of Kentucky...
...now a no-go zone ring-fenced by the US Army
Once we'd report from Muldraugh and West Point about county fairs and sick pets...
... now times have changed significantly.

Frank:

Pictures released to LBMW, however, show crowded streets...
...suggesting that, despite it all, some townsfolk are living as normal.
Frank Hemingway and Jackie Jaye, LBMW.

Breaking news on LBMW.
The Knox Exclusion Zone has been widened.
Early this morning, some camps growing along key access roads were moved back.
A statement from the office of General John McGrew reads as follows:
Civilians were moved peacefully and calmly...'
...and sometimes in military vehicles for their own safety.'
Rumors of conflict on the edge of the abandoned perimeter...
... however, have not gone away.
Meanwhile, throughout the nation the disruption continues.
There were fatalities today when a demo in New York turned violent.
Fear and panic are growing.
America looks to its leaders for answers.

This is Jackie Jaye with breaking news.
We're going straight over to a briefing from the White House.

President:

It is time to face facts. It is time to settle down.
We only ask for your responsible actions as an American citizen.
I, personally, take responsibility for the perceived lack of communication.
And for the rumor-mongering that has grown around the so-called 'Knox Event'.
At this time we have no reason to believe residents of Kentucky will not recover.
However, as the picture clears, and more information is made available...
... its likelihood is starting to recede.
We have been hesitant to discuss specifics, yes, but with reason.
The Knox Event IS contained, but its panic and confusion is not.
We wanted to establish facts, but public alarm has not provided enough time.
From 6pm tonight there will be curfews in some of our biggest cities.
This is for your protection. Please do not leave your house.
Please have faith in both our military and our emergency services.
I ask our journalistic community to report responsibly.
We are examining all potentialities.
I will update you whenever we have new information.

But... it's not verified.
We're working hard to assess what we've witnessed.
But there's still no official word on the true danger of the biological threat.
...that we can report on.
Embedded as we are, with General John McGrew's troops.
While we work on that, the President this morning addressed the nation.

There IS violence...
...terrible violence in there.
In one image, circulated between civilians on the border-line...
... a man appears with...
... with his arm unattached...
... and apparently unconcerned at his severe injury.

Jackie:

This morning's statement by the President...
... suggested that there was a receding chance of recovery.

Frank:

But still a chance.

Jackie:

This new evidence would suggest this is...

Frank:

We have pressed officials for an official response.

Someone from the inside, we've got one.
LBMW staff don't want to pour gas on the flames but... this is important.
Where've you been Joe?

Joe:

The military base.
Inside Knox.

Frank:

Who, who kept you there?

Joe:

The Army. McGrew's men.
They said it was a quarantine. Then one day we woke up
Doors unlocked. Soldiers... gone.
But in the main dorm. In the hall...
Blood.
Blood and... changed people.

Frank:

What don't they want us to know, Joe?

Joe:

What you already do know.
Like in the photos.
The first sickness.
It killed.
But it didn't kill enough.

Frank:

What you're saying can't be real.

Joe:

They got sick, they went crazy, they died.
Then they went for my fuckin' throat.
Sorry for the language.

Frank:

That's okay Joe
Joe, is it contained. Are you safe here with us?

Joe:

That much is true.
The people who changed... they're trapped behind the Event line.
Whatever they are...

Frank:

Is everyone infected?

Joe:

I think so. I think they all got it.
We were lucky.

Namely... bites from carriers.
The infected are shadows of human beings - savages.
They don't think, they just... want to bite.
And they're. They're dead.
They move, but they're dead.
We have been... encouraged to keep this truth from our listeners.
We disagreed.
We will endeavor to keep broadcasting on this wavelength.

There is absolutely NO need for further panic.
Panic... engendered by irresponsible and unofficial reporting.

It's been the night from hell at the Louisville border camp.
Violence between the military and civilian groups broke out and...
... it attracted them.
Hundreds of people with the Knox Event infection...
...maybe more. Maybe thousands.
They came in... through the wire.
Through the barricades.
They attacked. It was dark.
Some they killed.
Some died in the crossfire.
I don't know what happens next.
Jackie Jaye, LBMW.

Jackie:

This is Jackie Jaye.
If you're listening to this from Louisville. Get out.
This isn't scaremongering. This is really happening.
The people here are running. Scattering.
I've been outside.
There are bodies everywhere.
Some of them aren't dead.
The Knox Event is no longer contained.
I think it's coming to you.
The military have pulled out.
You can't take any risks.
Get out.
GET OUT NOW.

Jackie:

Hey this is Jackie.
I'm sorry. I'm sorry but there's more.
More news to report... here on LBMW.
Something else came out with the infected.
People here are getting ill.
Ill without fluid contact.
I think they're dying. It happens so quick.
This is only going to get worse.
Stay away from other people.
Keep indoors if you can't get away.
I don't know what it is but...
... it isn't going to stop.

Jackie Jaye on the LBMW frequency.
The camp looks like a battleground.
It's empty here now.
Folks are running through the dark.
Those who could anyways.
Not everyone gets the illness.
That's what people have said.
Maybe that's me too.
I'm going to stay here, with the broadcast equipment.
The military will be coming back through soon.
I need to keep you informed.
That's my job.
Was my job at least.

Jackie:

This is Jackie, on the LBMW frequency.
National news is reporting that it's in Louisville.
This thing... it spreads like wildfire.
I don't know what it is.
Wherever you are: avoid other people.
The dead are dangerous, but so are the living.
Go somewhere secluded, barricade and hide.
Wait till it all blows over.
Find a way to...
<cough>
... a way to escape.

Jackie:

This is Jackie, broadcasting on LBMW's frequency.
I've... caught the illness.
I have the Knox Event infection.
I've been hiding in here this whole time.
No bites. No scratches.
Those... things haven't got close.
But something did.
<cough>
I've seen it happen.
I'll be gone in day.
<cough>
The lights go out.
But something stays on.
Not much, hopefully.
If I was braver I'd...
God knows what I'd do.
I'm just going to wait.
Jackie out.

Jackie Jaye. <Cough>. LBMW.
I'm still here.
Need you to know something.
National networks are reporting that it's spread.
They're saying Somalia in Africa.
<cough>
They're saying... Norfolk, England.
I know it isn't possible.
But it's true.
Go listen to them now.
Go listen to someone else.
This place is a goddam wasteland.
<cough>
Keep safe.
Keep safe Kentucky.

Jonas

Day 0

Time: 12:0018:00

Radio.png

Jonas:

Hello? Hello?
Is it working? Can you hear it in there?
Okay cool.
My name is Jonas. Jonas Underwood.
We've cleared this area and set up camp.
We've come from Louisville.
Do NOT go to Louisville.
The infection just... spread.
People started getting sick.
So many of them.
All at the same time.
We left before... before it looked like it was gonna happen.
If you've been listening, we found Jackie.
She's at peace now.

Time: 18:0023:30

Radio.png

Jonas:

Hey it's Jonas.
More people have come by saying they're going to Louisville.
Do NOT go to Louisville.
They had a print-out. Said soldiers checked them for bites.
Stuck a gun to their head and gave them a sheet of paper.
This is what it says:
This is addressed to those immune to the second wave of the Knox Infection.'
You know you're immune. Till a bite at least.'
If you don't, you will in coming days.'
The time has come to bear arms against this threat.'
They may be your family, they may be your friends.'
Do not hesitate to pull the trigger.'

Day 1

Time: 00:0006:00

Radio.png

Jonas:

We're safe here, but we're surrounded.
We woke up this morning, and there they were.
Some staring. Some clawing at the door.
All of them hungry.
Still not used to seeing them up close.
They look so... so dead.
No other word for it.
Faces are blanks, 'cept for the hunger.
I don't think they're gonna go away.

Time: 12:0018:00

Radio.png

Jonas:

Okay again, this is what's being handed around.
This is addressed to those unaffected by the second wave of the Knox Infection.'
You might know who you are by now..'
If you don't, you will in coming days.'
The disease will not spread to you as it has to others...'
... but through fluid contact, by which I mean bites...'
... it surely will.'
The time has come to bear arms against this threat.'
They may be your family, they may be your friends.'
Do not hesitate to pull the trigger.'
These are dark days, but as a nation we can and will prevail.'
You have not been forgotten.'
We will come for you.'
We're going to keep reporting from here as long as we can.
If you can hear us, if anyone can, then we'll use this frequency.
Whatever helps us to help you.
We've got enough people around us to hold out.

Trivia

  • In previous versions of the gamewhich ones?, the LBMW Radio Van was white, with a red, white, and black depiction of the company logo as 93.2 LBMW, advertising "with Jackie Jaye" on the side. This model of the van can still be found in random vehicle crash encounters as a burned out husk. The current model of the van is now dark blue, with the LBMW logo changed to LBMW Network in gray, white, and blue.
  • The Jonas transmissions are one of three times that media adds to the player's panic and fear. (+16 across all 4 transmissions)
