Metalworking Guide

Metalworking in Project Zomboid builds some of the more durable fortifications available, and also allows for the creation of weaponary.

However at this time, Version 36.40, the only ability ingame available is the ability to create fortifications, weaponary crafting and smithing are due in a later version.

Basic Equipment Required

The equipment needed for Metalworking are as follows:

If your character did not start as a Metalworker, the following are also required:

It would also speed up your experience gain in Metalworking if you had the following Skill Books:

Deconstructing Items

To gain metal bars, pipes, scrap etc. you will need to de-construct various items in the world to gain basic metal parts, or find them stored in crates ingame.

To deconstruct items, you will need the Welding Mask and the Welder. Otherwise the option to deconstruct a item will not appear.

Based on your experience level when deconstructing a fixture ingame, one of three things can happen:

  1. You will be given the part for the item
  2. You will get scrap metal for the item (partial fail)
  3. You will get nothing from the item (complete fail)

The result is dependant on your skill level, and thus the higher the skill level, the more chance of success.

A character will still receive experience even if the deconstruction was unsuccessful.

Items that can be Deconstructed

The following in the world can be deconstructed and provide experience and parts for metalworking. (incomplete list)

  • Kitchen Sinks
  • Bathroom Skins
  • Shower basins
  • Bath tubs
  • Toliets
  • Road Signposts
  • Metal fences
  • Vending machines
  • Metal Kitchen cabinets
  • Metal Chairs

If a skillbook has been trained while deconstructing, the XP gain will be far higher and is realistically required as metal furnishings in the world are not common.

Time required while Deconstructing

It should be noted it takes a considerable amount of time to deconstruct (and reconstruct) anything relating to metal. You should be careful and wary if zombies are in the vacinity while doing so, as deconstructing something on a accelerated timespeed could get the player attacked.

Constructing Fortifications

Recipe Magazines for Metalworking

To a non-metalworker player, the following skillbooks will need to be found ingame to learn the skills necessary to construct specific fortifications.

These recipe magazines can be found in bookcases, and also within mailboxes outside of ingame houses.
