PAWS is a cancelled fighting video game developed by The Indie Stone for Xbox 360 and Windows. The game was first announced March 5th, 2009 on Lemmy and Binky's blog. Delays in development and lack of funds eventually resulted in it being cancelled March 8th, 2011.

The game is presented in bright and vibrant tones with hand-drawn sprites, while using fun, simple and catchy background music to create a kind and uplifting atmosphere, remeniscent of music from the early pokemon games. Journalists praised the adorable critters and beautiful looking scenery, describing it as one of the cutest games they've played in their history of game playing. PAWS was expected to be a big hit on Xbox Live Arcade, with a measely price of just 200 Microsoft Points.

Gameplay

PAWS contained a number of different game types and mechanics. Each character has its own unique special moves, or they can arm themselves with acorns from trees to be thrown at the opponents.

  • Tag: like the classical playground game, where someone is "it" and has to chase the other players around the arena trying to make them "it". If stayed "it" for too long, it's game over for them and they're out of the game until the next round.
  • King of the Hill: the object is to stay atop a hillside, fighting off opponents try to get to the top of the hill. Points are gained the longer they remain at the top.
  • Squidgematch: a deathmatch gamemode where each player must stomp on their opponents heads to gain the upper hand.
  • and more.

Playable Characters

  • Furbert the Squirrel - Uber special wall climbing abilities
  • Boris the Badger
  • Moley the Mole
  • Pancake the Hedgehog - Rolls into a ball to take out opponents
  • Fluffyfoot the Fluffy Bunny - Has a big bunny hop
  • Spiffo the Raccoon - Can steal items from other players

Development

Development is estimated to have begun prior to the release of Herbert West in Carrion Re-Animating in December 2008, due to PAWS being mentioned in the credits.

Hiatus

Development was put on-hold while leading developers, Lemmy and Binky, assisted developing a new game alongside Dan Marshall from Size Five Games (Zombie Cow Studios at the time). The game was being developed for Channel 4, which was a free sex educational game called Privates. Privates was also being made in XNA, therefore they could cross develop a Xbox Live Indie Games version which could provide some revenue to assist in development of future projects, such as PAWS. However, Microsoft denied the release on Xbox Live Indie Games due to the sexually explicity nature of Privates and the target audience (teenagers 14+).

Cancellation

PAWS was officially cancelled March 11th, 2011 for a number of reasons. Fristly, Lemmy grew to dislike XNA and the direction it was heading. Although it was a lot easier and quicker to work with than what Lemmy had worked with previously, most notably C++, DirectX and Sony hardware. XNA was also limiting in its cross-compatibility, specifically, on Linux and even a variety of PC hardware.

The biggest cause of PAWS being shelved indefinitely, was the lack of revenue and notoriety after the release of Privates, and their development funds had begun to dry up. For a couple of months prior to the cancellation of PAWS, the team of 3 (alongside Nick Cowen) had begun development of a secret project dubbed "Secret Project Alpha Romero" and took guidance from the success of Minecraft. Their new game, after doing a lot of research in programming languages and tools, was being developed with lwjgl, and was later released as Project Zomboid.
