Trapping is a skill in Project Zomboid. It allows the player to use traps to kill animals, which can then be used as food. The simplest trap the player can use is a mousetrap, which can be found in the world. The player can also use their trapping skill to create traps, if it is high enough. Player-made traps include wire snares, bird traps and box traps. The trap needs to have bait added to it to be effective. Traps can also break, or go off without trapping an animal inside. Traps are only effective in the wilderness, where there are no zombies around. Zombies are also attracted to traps with animals in them.

To create a trap you will need the required materials/tools in your main inventory and click either the material or the tool to make it. Your trapping skill is increased when you catch an animal (collect it from the trap). Traps also require a bait which determines what type of animals you will catch (if it is possible to catch that animal with the given trap).

The following animals can be caught in game currently:

  • Mouse
  • Rat
  • Squirrel
  • Birds
  • Rabbit

Bait for each type of animal:

  • Rabbit Bait: Carrots, Apple, Lettuce, Bell Pepper, Cabbage, Corn, Banana, Potato, Tomato, Peach.
  • Squirrel Bait: Peanut Butter, Cereal, Peanuts, Apple, Corn, Popcorn, Lettuce, Bell Pepper, Peach.
  • Bird Bait: Bread, Bread Slices, Worm, Corn, Cereal.
  • Mouse Bait: Cheese, Processed Cheese, Peanut Butter, Bacon Bits, Chocolate, Orange, Apple, Tomato.
  • Rat Bait: Cheese, Peanut Butter, Bacon Bits, Chocolate, Orange, Apple, Tomato, Processed Cheese.
