RE: Image Update Request

Hey there,

On my end the image seems to be fine, or at least the image you wish to upload so I don't really see much problem on my end, unless I'm misunderstanding what you are asking, but it seems the image did successfully update. :) Connall Project Zomboid Wiki Manager 01:50, 8 August 2015 (BST)

Hey Connall,

I notice that this afternoon. Not quite sure what was going on last night as it kept using the old image every time I refreshed. Thanks for looking into it and, er, apologies for wasting your time there xD.

Trouble with wiki

Hey, Malony. I am new to this stuff, so would it be possible to give me a quick run-down on how to link to other pages while writing?

Hey OddFly!

Good thing I saw this, I was about to head off for the night. To Link to another page, you need to place the exact name of the page in Brackets. For instance:

Burger

       Produces Burger

If you wanted to enter a link but give it a different name, you would need to use a Vertical Bar (|) in the link to change its name, for example:

Information on Burgers

Produces Information on Burgers while linking to the correct page.

If you wanted to enter a link to a category, its a slightly different format as you need to put a colon before the link, for example:

:Category:Food

Produces Category:Food while linking to the correct page.

The reason for the extra colon is that if it was linked directly to Category the wiki doesnt understand the coding involved so a extra ":" at the beginning is required.

Hope that helps! If you've got any other questions, feel free to drop a message and I'll try to get back to you.

A key question (get it?)

I don't know if you're even the proper person to approach about this, but I feel as though keys should get their own separate page. After clicking on keys in the items page, you are immediately redirected to the key ring page. I have done my best to work with it how it is, but I still feel as though it would be proper to separate the two, and I wouldn't even know how to go about creating a new page and finding the code for keys.

On an unrelated note, clicking shoes on the items page redirects back to the items page. In fact, a shoes page does not exist. Neither does a page for plastic bags, purses, school bags, or tote bags. They just redirect back to the items page. --TheOddFly

Hey Odd,

Technically, when it comes to the wiki's layout, the three admins should be consulted: List of Admins .

However as of recent the only admin I've even seen around is Pianoman, who has been dealing with a bot incursion when I returned to do some editing. I asked Connall a while ago a question but unfortunately he has not replied. Kirrus might be more contactable on The Indie Stone website.

However, from what I remember of the policy they had, I think it was on the lines of keeping pages to a minimum but grouping if possible so that hundreds of pages didnt need editing. (remember each page will eventually need to be translated to another language). So when it comes to the Key issue, probably the best bet, would be to explain the use of Keys and Keyrings together on the same page, basically stating how keys are gained, how they are put in the keyring, explaining the keyring etc. But the eventual decision lies with the Admins. My policy at the moment is to just establish some form of categorisation and format to the pages since there is no easy way to navigate.

Alternatively you could set up the page in the meantime, and if the admins don't like the fact theres two pages for keys they probably will merge them together.

Oh and just as a quick note, assume EVERYTHING is out of date. Every food page I've edited so far and redesigned was horrendously out of date.

The info for the items can be got from the zomboid folders in order:

Zomboid installed directory / Media / Scripts / items.txt---------------* Food/Weapon information
Zomboid installed directory / Media / Scripts / newitems.txt------------* Food/Weapon information
Zomboid installed directory / Media / Scripts / farming.txt-------------* Food Information
Zomboid installed directory / Media / Scripts / uniquerecipes.txt-------* 2 unique food items
Zomboid installed directory / Media / Scripts / recipesradio.txt--------* Construction info on electronics
Zomboid installed directory / Media / Scripts / recipesradio.txt--------* Info on electronics items
Zomboid installed directory / Media / Scripts / fixing.txt--------------* Repair information for weapons

DISREGARD the suburbsdistribution file in the Media/Scripts directory, its a old file and has since been replaced by a Lua file, which is in..

Zomboid installed directory / Media / LUA / SERVER / ITEMS / SuburbsDistribution.lua (its openable by notepad)

I'll be creating a editing page at some point to help people actually do editing on the wiki, since apparently, there isnt really a established one.

And just think! All you asked for was keys. xD

N.B - Relating to the items page looping on itself, I believe that was due to the original table linked to erroneous or non-useful pages and no-one filled them in so they linked back to the table since there wasnt much at the time to explain about, say a belt.

A Question

Are you using a green background on only food/drink pages? I wanted to make a template to simplify the beginning of each page, as well as make it easier to mass update pages using it if the need arises. --Andrew323 (talk) 08:51, 1 February 2017 (UTC)

Hey Andrew,

When I originally started bringing the entire food index up to date (ah the headaches) I settled on green for every food item, then went for blue for drinks at the time. As time went on, and the scale of the job became more evident with duplicate pages all over the place, I came to realise how disorganised the links in the wiki were and now my priority is to bring the information semi up to date but connect it all with a functional navigation system, which you'll see on a majority of the edited pages via the Pages now linking into the categories all the way to the main site "navigation map".

Problem is a fair amount of the out of date articles are either disconnected, completely different styles/templates, or just are unconnected to the main information tree which was in place in a basic form at the start. Or in some cases don't even exist like Metalworking.

If you can make a template that can simply set a colour based on the current design or something similar that would be great, just need to make sure everyone puts in a version no. for the zomboid version the page was edited in, and link it to the Version Category its relevant to ""ie Category:Version 36"".

Now that I've waffled endlessly, yes was going for green on food/drink (I'll correct the drinks later), blue for tools/weapons, and guides were dependant on the content, Health and Recipe ingredients had to have different colours because the recipe ingredients page's setup clashed with the green borders set for food as visually it was difficult to see the box coloured foods against the green background etc.

The FAQ page on my profile might help on how the pages are coded if that helps: User:MalonyJenkins/FAQ

Hope this somewhat helps in template construction if you plan to work on one.

Lowering Page Protections

Hey there,

Looking at the changes they seem good to my eye so I'm happy to lower the protections for a time. I will need to know exactly which pages you want the protection lowered on, I'm aware one of them is Help:Boilerplate_items but what are the others? I'll leave them unprotected for a little while but after your work is done I will most likely rebump their protection levels. --Connall Project Zomboid Wiki Manager 14:29, 19 February 2017 (UTC)

Hey Connall,

I'll get on it shortly, I was thinking all the boilerplates since we'd want to keep the theme intact, might add one or two more as well that will need protecting, as I can see new food items eventually coming in etc so might add a new one or two.

I'll leave a comment of "Done" on the edit when that boilerplate is complete. I'll try to make time to do them over the next two days.
-- MalonyJenkins (talk) 12:14, 20th February 2017 (BST)

I've lowered the protection on the pages, and have added them to my watchlist. Happy editing!

Protection Page Discussions

Looking really good man, good going! I have changed protections accordingly, so hopefully it's all good. Hope you get better soon, things are looking really great! --Connall (talk) Project Zomboid Wiki Manager 00:25, 29 April 2017 (BST)

Thanks Connall!

Thanks for locking those templates. I've added the Navbar to the Template Category page so it can be relocked now if necessary.

I'll switch the main page sandbox to main if I don't hear from Piano/Kirrus in the next day or so, was hoping to get their input but I don't think they are around that much so I think I'll rely on the judgement of the Wiki Manager that its fit for the front page.

If you think it needs any changes throw a message and I'll see what I can manage. I'll try to work on the "Community Portal" / "How to Help" pages next in the two sandboxes I operate and get back to you on those once they are done. Times a bit sketchy atm but at least that damn earache has gone, had it for nearly 5 weeks.

After that if I get time I'll have to see where to go next.

MalonyJenkins (talk) 18:40, 29 April 2017 (BST)

I've just learned I won't be available for most of tomorrow so instituted the change now. Revert if there is any problems and get back to me.

Protection Changes

"Who was it that thus cried?"

Been a world away the past week, apologies I saw the email previously but forgot to do something. Protection changes have been made, looks good. --Connall (talk) Project Zomboid Wiki Manager 23:13, 14 May 2017 (BST)

Happens to the best of us! Not a problem, I'll do the transfer of the page now and then work on modifying the help page when I get some free time. Bit tied up timewise atm but should clear up in the next week or so.
