More actions
A gate is a tile used to provide access through a wall. Many gates can be constructed by the player using the metalworking or carpentry skills.
Usage
Gates allow easier passage through walls while still helping to block and slow down zombies with this function being dependent on the gate height.
Gates work very similar to fences, with the advantage of being able to both open and close.
There are 2 gates heights: tall gates and small gates. Each with their own peculiarity.
Tall gates
Tall fences are large tiles, they are best used to provide defense to the player, slowing and, sometimes, completely blocking zombie's passage, while still allowing the player and their vehicles to easily cross when opened (depending on the tall gate length). Tall gates block vehicles from crossing if closed.
Players can open and close gates by pressing the key E. This can prove very useful when fleeing from zombies. However, it is important to note that while the gate is open, zombies can take advantage of this and easily cross through fences. Large open gates can also be used to let vehicles pass.
Tall gates are capable of completely blocking the vision if the player or a zombie is standing at same height as them. However, the big double pole gate, big pole fence gate and big double wired gate do not block the player's vision, instead, they allow the usage of firearms and some pointy weapons like knifes. Like many other tiles that block vision, the player can see what lies behind a tall gate by being one floor higher than the fence.
Depending on the zombies cognition, they may prioritize finding nearby weaknesses before attempting to break a tall gate, such as doors, windows, small fences or simply walking around the tall gate. If the Custom Sandbox option for zombies cognition is set to "navigate+open doors", zombies can open gates.

Small gates
Small gates are short tiles, while they don't provide the same defense as tall gates, they are less expensive to make, easier to climb, block some vision and make zombies vulnerable when climbing over it, while still allowing the player and their vehicles to easily cross when opened (depending on the small gate length). Small gates block vehicles from crossing when closed.
Gaining distance
Small gates can be used to gain distance from the undead, while they don't completely block the zombies passage, they are much easier for players to cross. Players can open and close small gates by pressing the key E.
Player's can try to jump over small gates, by running or sprinting, while zombies have to throw themselves over it. This is slight faster than opening then closing the gate. However, it is important to note that doing is not guaranteed to suceed, with the sucess/fail chance being dependant on many factors, such as the player's fitness and strength level, traits, weight and moodles. If the player suceeds, they'll jump over it without any movement penalty, othewise, the player will fall on the ground, leaving they vulnerable and with potential scratches that may affect their mobility.
Only crawlers typically target small gates.
Fighting
When fighting at close range, like fences, gates can be used to leave zombies vulnerable. When zombies try to climb over small gates, they'll fall down. At this moment, the player can use a melee weapon or a stomp to perform a potentially letal blow. However, caution is needed, if the game has the option "fence lunge" activated (on by default), zombies will try to lunge on the player, potentially making them trip. This attack can be prevented by getting enough distance or by hitting the zombie with a weapon, stomp or shove.
Hiding
Some small gates block vision, but due to their shortened size, this can only be taken advantage while sneaking close to them. This can prove very helpful, since players can still see through the fence, while non-near zombies can't.[verify]

Trivia
- Interesting enough, the barbed fence gate currently has no collision. This might change once build 42 arrives.
