- This article is about randomized scenarios that can spawn in the environment. For annotated maps, see Map (item).
Randomized stories can appear in the game that come in the form of themed zombies and/or loot. These stories mainly serve to add more depth to the world of Project Zomboid as a form of environmental storytelling, and do not serve any major gameplay purpose. The spawn rates of these stories are adjustable in sandbox settings.
These stories are divided into five distinct types: building stories, vehicle stories, zone stories, table stories, and survivor stories.
Vehicle stories
- Main article: Vehicle stories
Vehicle stories are randomized stories that involve vehicles. These spawn only on roads, and usually feature either a car accident or some sort of parked vehicle. Players driving on roads will need to stay alert for these vehicle stories, as crashing into one of these at higher speeds can result in severe injuries and/or vehicle damage.
Some cars featured in these stories are considered "wrecks" and cannot be entered or driven.
There are other car crashes/pileups that can spawn on roads but are not considered vehicle stories as their positioning in the game world is predefined, such as the pileup at the highway junction between Rosewood and Muldraugh.
Zone stories
- Main article: Zone stories
Zone stories are randomized stories that spawn in outdoor areas that are not roads. These typically involve scenes of outdoor activities like barbecues and baseball games, with each type of story only spawning on predetermined areas of land (such as near lakes and rivers for the Fishing Trip story).
Building stories
- Main article: Building stories
Building stories are stories that change the appearance of the building and/or loot found inside containers. As such, they are similar to survivor stories and table stories, though they do have their differences. They usually spawn in designated buildings, though some will spawn in just about any building.
Survivor stories
- Main article: Survivor stories
Survivor stories are "randomized building" stories that spawn within residential homes, usually in the living room (if one exists). These stories usually depict average, everyday scenes that had happened in these houses right when the Knox Event began, such as birthday parties or people watching sports games together. Others are references, such as Hockey Psycho, which seemingly depicts a psychopath modeled after Jason from the Friday the 13th series having slain a few victims in a house.
Table stories
- Main article: Table stories
Table stories are "randomized building" stories that spawn only on tables inside of residential homes. Unlike other kinds of randomized stories, table stories do not contain zombies nor corpses, and only contain loot of a certain category.
The loot these stories provide are essentially like "starter kits" for the type of skill they involve: the table story containing electronics, for instance, contains a screwdriver, some electronics, and a related magazine to provide players with the things they need to start interacting with electrical.
Each table story will only spawn in tables in specific rooms, so, for instance, it is not possible to find food related table stories in a bedroom.
