A discussion about french articles titles

Connall

I only just caught this since I've been away for a few days. Sorry it took this long, for what is undoubtedly alot of work. You can't create new pages for what I assume are French? titles. There is a reason why it's set like <english>/fr and it has to do with the translation banner for the wiki. It means I'm going to have to do some pretty big reverts to put them back as they were. Did you flesh these pages out much with new information, where a rollback could lose a fair bit of new info, or was it just porting it to this new format?

Tickleman

I did some changes into some of the pages content, so a rollback would remove everything.

Some arguments FOR having language-titled-articles. We should talk about this before doing big-reverts.

  • The problem with <english>/fr pages is that the title of the pages will be <english>/fr, which is not a good thing for fr (or other languages) people. What would you mean if the title of your "Bag" page was "Sac/en" ? You don't known what "sac" mean ? Young players don't know what "bag" mean, so for an international wiki full-translation is the best, don't you think so ? Look at the "almost-official" wiki for Minecraft : french pages are full-french, including the titles.
  • I applied the necessary patch to get the translation banner working well : with a <english>/fr page which is a #REDIRECT [[My french titled page]], everything goes well ! I did not make this for all pages, but I was working on it and sure to get it ready soon. The only difference is that the current language is not black, but that is the only difference with <english>/fr pages.

Look at Bois as an example : it works. When you come from the english page you've got Bois : it works well too ! Why don't make it work like this ?

How please, please let my french-titled pages, don't revert it ! I'm begging you ! I accept to put a Bois link to my Bois page, and the same for all ! I'll do my best to have all translations links working !

I would be happy to discuss it more, and hear your arguments. But please listen to mine :).

Friendly yours, Tickleman.

PS : the biggest changes were : new translated pages, updated recipes (gave me a lot of work and wiki-crashed-oops-then-repaired)..., the Project Zomboid Wiki/fr too. French was very late, and I want it to be up-to-date now, in something that looks to be the best available wiki for PZ as for now.

Alright as long as you make it compatible then it's fine. :)

Cool ! You're very great, thanks.

I know the french wiki is a little bit broken with what I've done, but I promise I'm finishing the cleanup and adding new translations so that it will be quickly up-to-date and stable. Everything will be ok very soon.

Prefer "Baseball Bat" rather than "Baseball bat". So go with that naming convention if need be.

As for deletion pages, I can't right now, just point out the pages and I'll look into it. --Connall (talk) 18:34, 20 March 2014 (UTC)

Perhaps you will like it

I'm working on something to make adding / maintaining of the pages of the wiki faster, simplier, cleaner and more reliable.

I can extract the items data from the game LUA scrits and store them into a very simple database.

Then I load these data and display them as... wiki pages sources.

Have a look at it : http://pzservers.net/wikitools/item

For french pages (others languages may work too) : http://pzservers.net/wikitools/item?lang=FR

So. I've got a question : what is the most accomplished page for an item in the wiki ? I would use it's page source to get the better possible template for the pages sources that my little tool will generate.

I suppose the hammer: Hammer if you want to extend the template you could include the code as a section for the item. If you want it a bit expanded, since it was originally removed since we weren't able to automate the pages to keep it updated, people made a stink about it so the section was removed. Looks like a great thing, keep me updated on the update if you could. :) --Connall (talk) 14:08, 22 March 2014 (UTC)
I'm working on generating the recipes template page : http://pzservers.net/wikitools/recipes. Working with intl pages ie http://pzservers.net/wikitools/recipes?lang=FR. All done with the games files, so we've got all 68 recipes now. Some problems : names are now exactly the ones that we've got in game, so a lot of them must be renamed if we use this. But I will do the work for the french and probably the EN pages. Other problems : the numeric identifiers (ie 2001, 2002, etc.) won't be kept, and recipes descriptions must be entered manually into my database to avoid crashing them into the current recipes pages.
But my script does a lot of the work, so it's useful to get all new recipes once a new version gets out.

About images resizing and duplicates

I personally don't see much benefit to replacing all the pictures just in an effort to rename them, which itself doesn't do much. If someone where to upload a duplicate image after not finding the original they would be warned of such a thing. If it's in an effort to help sort out the auto generation system you have made, then by all means can certainly go with the idea. As for the title style I agree should probably be size indicated by number rather than something as ambiguous as "big" so yeah. --Connall (talk) 16:03, 4 April 2014 (BST)
