Fishing is a Survivalist skill, and an activity that allows you to use a Fishing Rod combined with Bait (disambiguation) to catch various types of fish. As Fishing levels improve, so does the quality of fish you are able to catch, along with actually catching something, the chance to break the line, the chance to lose the bait, and the chance to lose the fish if baited.
This ability is a great way to feed yourself if you have decided to camp near the river, as a single fish could feed you for a day. Fishing is a useful skill to choose in West Point, as West Point is much closer to bodies of water than Muldraugh.
Usage
To begin fishing, you must have a Fishing Rod and some Bait in your main inventory (bags do not count), and right click on a river or lake to select the Fishing right click context option. Fishing takes about five seconds to complete. While fishing, the rod will occupy your main hand, and the bait will occupy your secondary, so you may want to leave any secondary bags at home, or at least make sure they are relatively unpacked. Because of that, you may want to make sure your fishing area is zombie free.
Experience is only gained when something is caught, even if its junk such as Socks. From November to February, nothing can be caught at all, not even junk like Socks. The player can overfish an area, where no more fish can be caught from said area until eventually replenished naturally.
Repairs
Quite often, your rod will lose it's line while fishing. To reline your rod, you must have:
- A Nail or Paperclip
- Twine or Fishing Line
When used in the repair, the Nail or Paperclip is consumed, while the Twine or Fishing line loses some of its durability. The Fishing Rod doesn't lose durability when used for fishing.
Occupations & Traits
The Fisherman occupation provide a starting boost to the Fishing skill. The Fisherman occupation starts the player off with +3 to the Fishing skill. The Angler trait also begins the player off with a starting boost to it, giving +1 to the Fishing skill. Both can be taken with each other, giving the player a +4 starting boost to the Fishing skill.
Items
Rods
The main tool in fishing, along with Bait. If the player is in a pinch, they can also craft makeshift fishing rods or a Wooden Lance to spearfish.

Bait
There are three types of bait that you can use for fishing, Worms, Fishing Tackle, and Little Bait Fish. Insects may also be used as bait, and are consumed like Worms or Bait Fish.
Worms are the most common bait to find. You can find them uncommonly while scavenging around the town, or you can find them frequently while digging with a Trowel. So long as it's your selected bait, a worm will be consumed every time you fish, even if you fish up junk items like Socks.
Fishing Tackle is found while scavenging, and has a higher chance of catching fish instead of junk. They have a durability, unlike both Worms and Bait Fish, thus you can use them more than once, reducing the weight for the bait you need to bring. It is recommended to conserve any available Fishing Tackle, unless the player's Fishing skill level is medium or higher.
Bait Fish are fish that you have a chance of obtaining while fishing or by using a Fishing Net Trap. Bait Fish can catch only Pike, have a 50% chance to catch more junk, and are consumed when used as bait.
