Template Design

Hey Andrew.

Thanks for working on a template for pages, admittedly I'm not familiar with template code and you're probably making everyones lives about 200% easier! (Especially mine!)

I'll keep tabs on recent changes and start using it when you think its ready to go.

Hey Malony. It's almost ready for use, but I wanted the template to automatically take the version it was given and categorize the page with it. I don't believe I can use regex so there's no way I can see to have it drop colons or anything unnecessary, so pages will have to either use;
Category:Version: 36.4 (The exact way the version box on updated pages is writte now)
Category:Version 36 (Current proper category, just dropping the minor version on pages updated to release branch. Could alternatively use Version 36.4, no colon)
or stick with manual categorization as pages already do. I hope it wouldn't be a huge issue to display the second as long as IWBUMS page updates use, say, IWBUMS 37.2 instead of Version 37.2.

Other than that the only thing I think I need to do is create the documentation. --Andrew323 (talk) 20:04, 4 February 2017 (UTC)

Hey Andrew,

Sorry for the late response, afraid life is getting busy on this side.

It's a bit of a issue in some sense, it would be better to have it accurate, so it shows the .## n.umber, but if the coding makes that a issue it might be better to keep it to major versions. I'd be more inclined to use the formal version then add a template graphic box after for "Incremental Version" which isnt linked to a category. Then at least major version release data is together. Otherwise we're going to have hundreds of categories over time due to release versions such as 37.1,37.2,37.3 and then their language equivalents of 37.1/es, 37.1/fr, 37.1/ru etc etc.

Not sure what code changes for the template would be required for that sortof change though.

I'll have to think it over, but if you come up with a better solution, let me know.

Separating major and incremental versions with two parameters would be the simplest way to solve this without ending up with 100 wanted categories. This will also mean unless you manually add it all items will only be able to use the major version category.
The template will still take whatever word comes before the n.umber as part of the category though, so IWBUMS and Version (for releases) can end up in two different places. --Andrew323 (talk) 22:02, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Ok, I think the template covers everything now. Is the documentation on it easy to understand? --Andrew323 (talk) 04:48, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Looks clear enough to me, just created the Lamp on Pillar page based on the documentation on how to put out the header. That has saved a fair bit of typing by the look of it! Nice linking in the categories with the navbar, that works extremely well.

At some point I'll go over old pages and replace old navbars. When I'm not too busy! - MalonyJenkins 19:39, 8th February 2017 (BST)
