Skill books are various books which give your character an experience boost after being read. It is best to read them until the bar is near full, then move so it stops and start again until it says all the pages of the book are read for the maximum multiplier. Carpentry for beginners provides a multiplier of up to 18. Carpentry for intermediates does not provide a booster until your carpentry level is higher and you character can be seen with the words "I just don't understand this..." above his/her head when attempting to read it before you carpentry level is high enough.

When carpentry level is at least one the carpentry book for intermediates is then usable, but when at level one it is a complete waste of time because it removes the carpentry for beginners multiplier and the carpentry for intermediates multiplier can also only go up to 18. Although if you wait until you are carpentry level two, your beginners carpentry multiplier disappears on its own and beginners carpentry books no longer give multipliers, so the intermediate skill book then becomes useful.
When your skill level is at least level one, the skill books for intermediates are then usable. When your skill level is at least level two, the skill books for advanced are usable. When your skill level is at least three, then the skill books for experts are usable. When your skill level is at least level four, then the skill books for masters are usable. When your skill level reaches five, you have completely mastered the skill.
**As of 2.9.10, only Carpentry Skill Books exist**

Bugs: When reading another skill book the multiplier may disappear, either canceling the effect or just erasing the multiplying sign whilst the effects remain.
