As shown below, different items can be used to light campfires, and, once alight, it is possible to 'add fuel' using the right click menu on a placed campfire in order to keep it lit for different lengths of time. Kindlings don't work every time, and can break after a few tries. Firemen have a better chance of lighting a campfire with kindling. Lighters or matches plus fuel are more reliable.

It is possible to 'Add Fuel' using the right click menu on a placed campfire in order to keep it lit for different lengths of time. If the selected campfire has not had fuel added, the 'Light Fire' option will not appear for ignitable items that do not provide a fuel duration, such as gas cans. Further, the 'Light Fire' option is only available if an ignitable item is in an accessible inventory and the player has its method of ignition. The 'Light Fire' option is not available if there are no ignitable items in an accessible inventory, even if one has been added as fuel.

A campfire can be used to dispose of corpses instead of burying them. Each corpse must be dropped on top of the campfire, not placed inside the campfire container. Once the fire has been lit, attempting to add more corpses carries a high risk of catching oneself on fire. The safest strategy is to place all corpses before lighting the campfire.

Campfires are a heat source created using a campfire kit. Once lit, they can be used to cook food. Be warned, both zombies and human survivors can be set on fire if they stand too close to the fire! According to EasyPickins, a Project Zomboid developer, the best suggestion for what to do if caught on fire is to run around for a short time.[1]

The campfire acts like a container on the ground. Uncooked food can be dragged from player's inventory into the container. It will cook if the fire has been lit. The player should keep an eye on it while it is cooking.

Lighting

It is possible to 'Add Fuel' using the right click menu on a placed campfire in order to keep it lit for different lengths of time. If the selected campfire has not had fuel added, the 'Light Fire' option will not appear for ignitable items that do not provide a fuel duration, such as gas cans. Further, the 'Light Fire' option is only available if an ignitable item is in an accessible inventory and the player has its method of ignition. The 'Light Fire' option is not available if there are no ignitable items in an accessible inventory, even if one has been added as fuel.

Corpses

A campfire can be used to dispose of corpses instead of burying them. Each corpse must be dropped on top of the campfire, not placed inside the campfire container. Once the fire has been lit, attempting to add more corpses carries a high risk of catching oneself on fire. The safest strategy is to place all corpses before lighting the campfire.

Disassembly

A campfire may be picked up by right-clicking it and selecting the 'Take Campfire Materials' option. It will then return to a Campfire Materials item in the player's inventory and may be placed again. It is unnecessary to extinguish the campfire before picking it up. When picked up, any items inside the campfire will be placed on the ground, but remaining fuel will be lost, even if the campfire was never ignited.

Fuel

There are different types of fuels that can be added to a campfire that allows it to burn. The ignited item's burn time will be added as fuel when the fire is started and is not lost (except for the Notched Wooden Plank and Sturdy Stick or Tree Branch, as they are not consumed). See fuel page for a comprehensive list of items that can be used as a fuel for a campfire.
