A rain collector barrel is a craftable water container.
Usage
Rain Collector Barrels are used to collect rainwater, and take up one tile space. When it is raining, they will convert the rain into usable albeit tainted water that is unsafe to drink until boiled in a heat source, although it can be safely used to water plants and wash clothing or yourself without needing purification. It may also safely store drinking water if kept indoors. They are an alternative to the well or a body of water, such as a river or lake, in gathering water after the waterworks shut down. The lesser collector requires level four Carpentry to build, and the bigger collector requires level seven Carpentry. The smaller collector stores 160 units of water and the larger stores 400. There is also a metal drum barrel which can currently be found at the camp site around Louisville which holds 800 units. It is not (yet) possible to craft the Metal Drum without installing mods.
A rain collector barrel can supply water to an entity that may be plumbed (sinks, baths, etc), please see Plumbing for more information.
(Note: Most buildings without roof access do not have roofs which are solid, meaning the player will fall through unless a wood floor has been constructed underneath. It is advised that players use caution when constructing roof access to place water collectors.)
Before build 41 the wrench was needed instead of the pipe wrench for plumbing a sink, which effectively rendered the pipe wrench redundant. However, this was resolved in build 41.
