Tool-usage
Can be used to remove bushes. The machete is not an effective tool for cutting down trees, dealing 10 damage per hit. An axe will deal 35 damage per hit and has a mode to cut down trees. The same does also apply for bashing down doors, an axe with 35 damage again is far more effective than the machete, with only 10 damage per hit.
Weapon
The machete can hit up to 2 enemies at a time (with multi-hit enabled), dealing a maximum of 3 damage to enemies (unless a critical hit) from up to 1.23 tiles away at an attack speed of 1.
The weapon can be attached to the character's back for quick access and encumbrance reduction. The weapon can also be used to craft the spear with machete, a powerful spear.
Condition
The machete has a maximum condition of 13. Its rate of degradation is influenced by the long blade and maintenance skills. The chance of losing durability can be simplified to the following formula: 1 in (25 + maintenanceMod × 2)
. Where "maintenanceMod" is calculated using the long blade and maintenance skills.

Buildings
- The best method of finding a machete is looting hardware stores. The West Point and Riverside shopping district each have a hardware store.
- Pawn shops and military surplus stores have a high chance of spawning machetes. Both can be found in Louisville.
- Machetes can spawn in metal shelves in warehouses.
- Machetes can also be found inside barricaded buildings.
Zombies
- After 20 days survived, a machete can be rarely found impaled in some zombies.
- Can be found impaled in a rare zombie dressed as the Friday the Thirteenth antagonist Jason Voorhees; regardless of days survived.
